Craft Challenge - Bleach Art

So does this neat thing every month where they put up ideas of things people might not really have thought of in terms of making art. This month's 'challenge' was bleach art, which is taking a shirt and using household bleach to create designs on it instead of paint or whatever.

I decided I had to give this a go, so I took an old shirt my mom had spilled some bleach on and made this little thing, which Lilith was kind enough to model for me holding a copy of the book that inspired it all - The Necronomicon. See, the outer box shape is the Gate of Marduk, which grants access to the sixth of seven zones that the book says exist above the earth. It is my favorite of the seven gate symbols. The circle in the middle is the Seal of Marutukku, the Master of the Arts of Protection. It's basically a protection seal, which I thought was appropriate inside the gate. This same set of symbols also adorns a wooden shield I have for cosplay purposes.

Anyway, outside of the box and circle shapes the entire thing was done freehand with some paintbrushes and a little bleach. Took me maybe 10-15 minutes to paint it on, another hour to allow it to air dry completely and then a quick hand washing in the laundry tub and a run through the drier. It still kind of smells like bleach, but I've noticed that it's fading so I'm sure in time that'll go away.

This shirt is not for sale, and at the moment we will not be doing others like it. However, we are looking into the possibility for the near future.
